Joan’s Story – Impacting Through Mentorship

Joan Bernstein moved to Abbey Delray South in 2021 from New York, where she supported various volunteer community volunteer programs for teenagers and young adults.

She easily decided to get involved in the community scholarship program, mentoring four Haitian students as they crafted their essays for the Lifespace scholarship. Joan encouraged them to share their ideas, often exclaiming, “Bingo!” when they had a breakthrough – and their applications came to life.

“They developed confidence and took pride in their abilities, and I was proud of them,” Joan smiles.

“The scholarship program is an incentive to work at Lifespace, offering numerous benefits. It also enhances my experience at ADS,” adds Joan. “I find joy in engaging with these remarkable young people. The foundation allows me to contribute in meaningful ways, providing a sense of fulfillment and keeping me connected to the future generation.”

Joanne’s Story – Igniting the Scholarship Fund

When Joanne Thomas joined the Foundation board, she eagerly accepted the position of Secretary for two years and then served as Chair for one year, during which time she focused on ADS team members.

The committee’s first project was the scholarship fund, which exceeded its fundraising goals. “It’s incredible how many caring residents we have at ADS,” says Joanne. “Many team members are young and eager to explore opportunities to advance their futures. Seeing them embrace and benefit from this opportunity brings us joy.”

Joanne noted that most scholarship applications came from the Culinary and Health Center departments, so she reached out to the maintenance department. The committee researched accredited schools in the field and shared the information with team members, hoping that they would apply for a Lifespace scholarship.

The inspiring efforts of Joan and Joanne reflect the profound impact that mentorship and community support can have on young lives. Their dedication fosters personal growth among the scholarship recipients and also strengthens the bonds with Abbey Delray South. As they continue to ignite ambition and create opportunities, they remind us all of the importance of uplifting the next generation.

Thanks to all who contribute to the Lifespace Foundation’s scholarship program.
