Kathy Leonard dedicated six impactful years to the Lifespace Foundation, serving two years as vice chair and two years as chair of the Foundation’s Advisory Committee (FAC) at Abbey Delray South (ADS), Delray Beach, Fla. One of the committee’s goals has been to promote educational opportunities by supporting the Scholarship Fund.
In 2024, the committee proudly awarded scholarships to five deserving recipients. [See list below]. The scholarship amount has significantly increased since its inception, reaching $5,000 in 2022, enough to make a real difference for the recipients.
Watching scholarship recipients’ personal and professional growth is especially gratifying for Kathy, who is inspired by their work ethic. These students balance their jobs, family obligations, and coursework, attend night or day classes, and often participate in clinical and extra labs.
“It’s wonderful to see them graduate and embark on their careers,” she says. “We watch them evolve from being shy and uncertain to confidently taking charge of their professional paths. Many have received promotions, and it’s rewarding to see their skills and self-assurance flourish.”
“The care they show us daily reinforces the sense of family in our community,” adds Kathy. “It feels like observing your grandchildren grow up. As they develop new skills and personal growth, it’s nothing short of a marvelous opportunity to support them.”
Kathy has always been committed to helping others. Throughout her life, she has dedicated herself to non-profit work, both in New York and Florida. Following the events of 9/11, she helped found JAM & ALL Interfaith, a South Florida organization of Jews, Muslims, and all people, to foster communication and understanding among diverse communities.
Celebrating generosity
At Abbey Delray South, Kathy has been honored to be a part of the Foundation and believes that providing support to team members through the Scholarship Fund is a worthwhile pursuit.
She emphasizes the talent and dedication of the entire 10-member FAC. This team focuses on donor recognition and expresses gratitude for the wonderful support from the residents, particularly long-term ADS resident Bill Wheeler. Bill has made a significant bequest to the Scholarship Fund in his will, stating that receiving a scholarship to college as a young man changed his life.
Along with other FAC members, Kathy leads by example, making significant donations each year to jump-start the annual fundraiser. The committee recently recognized residents who contributed $1,000 or more with a mention in the weekly newsletter and a list of their names on a special banner.
The committee also organizes events to promote Foundation initiatives and raise awareness about scholarship opportunities. They actively engage with team members during meetings, assist them with essay writing, and host a special luncheon to celebrate scholarship recipients– this year providing them with backpacks as recognition tokens.
Here’s a look at some of the inspiring scholarship recipients at Abbey Delray South who are making their dreams a reality:
Wislande Ceus, a head Culinary Server, achieved her dream of becoming a nurse and is now a member of the Medical Surgical unit at a local South Florida hospital. While working towards her associate and bachelor’s degrees, Wislande received three Lifespace scholarships. “From her first essay to her last, it was incredible to witness her growth in writing and understanding,” Kathy says. “She has truly captured everyone’s hearts.”
Another former scholarship recipient, Albert Norgaisse, used his support to earn a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in computer science and is now employed as an account manager and IT support specialist.
Iliana Fernandez, the current Lifestyle Director at ADS, started with Lifespace as a Culinary Server and earned a Bachelor of Science in Care Management through her determination and a Lifespace scholarship. “It’s heartwarming to have seen her work tirelessly at every step, as she has been promoted to serve in many roles, including ADS Dining Room Manager and Health Center Lifestyle Director,” says Kathy.
“Each of our scholars is truly remarkable. Supporting their dreams fills us with joy. Every step we take to help them is a blessing,” Kathy concludes. “Their stories remind us that anything is possible with passion, perseverance, and community support.”
Thanks to Kathy’s tireless efforts and the Foundation Advisory Committee at Abbey Delray South, the future of many young individuals at ADS shines brighter.
